Help!

I found some what looks like an extra nail on my dogs pawpad two days ago it started to bleed while we were outside i take her to the vet she says she doesn't know what it is but they will remove it and take it to a biopsy lab. I did a lot of research on the internet and i think my dog has cutaneous horn and it is a type of skin tumor and now i am freaked out about the fact that my dog has a tumor which can be cancerous does anyone else's dog had cutaneous horn ? Is it dangerous is it curable?

Please help, thank you!

Hello there!

I have not owned a dog with this condition but as with other types of growths, it doesn't necessarily have to be a malignant cancer. Of course, there is always that chance but in my experience these growths that look like a nail can be caused by several other conditions. For instance, I have seen one in a dog once caused by papillomavirus, but other causes of similar growths are footpad hyperkeratosis which can be also due to uneven wear, corns, and of course, a tumor, which can also be benign.

Best of luck and keep us updated on your vets findings! And if you are concerned and need a second opinion, you can always see a veterinary dermatologist.

Hopefully it's not a cancerous growth but something benign, keep us posted on your vet's findings. keeping paws and fingers crossed it turns out to be nothing!
